Believe it or not, snacking is actually encouraged between meals for post-op bariatric surgery patients. As long as you are doing it correctly and grabbing for the right foods, snack away! Getting hungry between meals is common for anyone, and by not eating anything you might end up getting too hungry. As anyone would, feeling “starved” leads to overeating, eating too quickly, and not being mindful of what you’re eating. As you could guess, this is a big problem for a post-bariatric patient. That’s why snacking is actually really beneficial in post-weight loss surgery patients.
If you struggle to tell the difference between your thirst and hunger cues, try drinking a glass of water and waiting for 20 minutes. If 20 minutes has passed and you’re still hungry, then go ahead and grab a snack. Just make sure you’re snacking on the right foods!
So, what are the right foods? Anytime you are snacking, consider foods that are high in protein and low in sugar. Protein and fiber will help you feel fuller, longer. Consider healthy snack foods like Greek yogurt with fruit, veggies with hummus, cottage cheese, apples with nut butter, hard-boiled eggs, or a high-protein shake! If you are consuming a high-carb snack, just be sure to pair it with some protein to help satisfy your cravings and keep you feeling full. These are easy bariatric snack ideas that you can keep on hand as a grab-n-go option.
If you’ve got a little more time on your hands for meal prep, we’ve included a list of high protein bariatric snack ideas. These are great to give you some additional gab-n-go snacks so you don’t get tired of eating the same ones each day.
